Bankruptcy filings are public records open to examination by law with few exceptions. See 11 U.S.C. § 107; Fed. R. Bankr. P. 5003, 9037. Bankruptcy courts are not responsible for verifying or validating information in consumers’ credit reports.
To view bankruptcy case records, you may visit a bankruptcy clerk’s office. Use the Federal Court Finder to find a location. You may also access bankruptcy case records online through Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER). You will need to sign up for a PACER account to search for and view records online.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) provide information to the public on their websites regarding disputing data on credit reports. The FTC’s toll-free number is 877-FTC-HELP (382-4357), and the CFPB’s toll-free number is 855-411-2372.
